In the 16th and 17th century Middelburg together with Amsterdam formed the heart of the Netherlands. From the docks many ships sailed, to collect the wealth from the Far East and South-America. Picturesque squares, characteristic alleyways and monumental facades guarantee you many hours of strolling pleasure. Whilst enjoying a cup of cappuccino with a ‘bolus’ or a ‘babbelaar’ you can relax and recover from all that beauty. Would you prefer something more active? Then climb the 90 metre high “Lange Jan”, take a boat trip round the canals or visit the mini variations of well known buildings in “Miniatuur Walcheren”. Or you can admire the historic artifacts in the Zeeuws Museum.

For the experienced shopaholic Middelburg has everything to offer. The city surprises you with cool shops set in monumental décor, small boutiques and leading specialist shops. Also lovers of art and curiosa can for fill there wishes. The city center has many galleries, antique shops and artist studios. These you mostly find these on the quays and small streets of the city. Thursday is late night shopping in Middelburg; the shops remain open until 21.00 hours.
The first Sunday of the month there is an art and culture route. And form 13.00 hours to 17.00 hours a great number of the galleries, studios, antique shops and other cultural institutions are open.
