Spotting seals in the Voordelta
The Voordelta is a unique nature reserve. Even on the European scale, this coastal area is of great importance. Many types of birds come here to feed, rest or breed. They live here all year round or just come to rest before migrating. Wind, tides and waves, form sandbanks and mud flats in the Voordelta. Also shellfish, worms and other creatures living under the water. There is plenty of food for birds and fish. Where there are a lot of fish and sandbanks, Seals feel at home.
Six rules of thumb
Nature exists where the conditions are favourable. So the seals find their own favourite places. In the Voordelta there is enough space over for people to enjoy them selves too. As long as you do not disturb the wild life, and you obey these few rules:
- Do not enter the areas where birds and seals are resting unless you have permission, the borders are clearly marked with yellow barrels or poles, and are marked on your maps.
- Do not approach the seals, even if they are curious and come near to you.
- Leave the birds alone; large birds and flocks of birds need more space than others.
- Avoid the breeding places, and large concentrations of animals ,do not go near the young animals ,keep your dog well away
- Leave as a visitor only your footsteps behind take your rubbish home with you.
- Give other people in the area space and quiet too.
