Markiezaatskade - 1983
The Markiezaatskade is one of the Delta works completed in 1983. It is a part of the compartimenteringswerken (compartment works) that were built to make the Oosterschelde smaller.
The Markiezaatskade lays between South-Beveland and the Molenplaat near Bergen op Zoom and has a length of 4 kilometres. The dam was made as a help dam for the later built Oesterdam. Also the Markiezaatskade prevented the currents being to strong on the Schelde-Rijn connection.
On the 2nd of January 1981 a start was made on the dam and it was finalized on the 20th of March 1983. The construction could have been finished sooner but because of a storm in 1982 a part of the construction of the Markiezaatskade was destroyed. This set the work back.
