Oesterdam

Oesterdam - 1986

The Oesterdam is the longest construction of the Delta works at almost 11kilometres.The dam can be found between Tholen and Zuid-Beveland and was completed in 1986. It forms a section of the “compartimenteringswerken”(compartment works) that was built for the narrowing of the Oosterschelde.

To connect Tholen with Zuid-Beveland, there was the Zoommeer. This was a part of the Schelde-Rhine channel that connects the Waal to the harbours of Antwerp. The Zoommeer would have gone to Bergen op Zoom if the Markiezaatskade had not been there. This dam was between 1981 and 1983 laid to make the building of the Oesterdam easier. Through the laying of the Markiezaatskade the Zoommeer became the waterway connecting the Markiezaatskade and the Oesterdam.

In 1986 the Oesterdam was finished, but not until 1989 when the roads had been laid over the entire dam was it officially opened.
