Oosterschelde (East Scheldt)

Oosterschelde

The Oosterschelde is closed-off by the majestic and magnificent Delta Works. Nevertheless, this inland water is still in the grip of the sea. There are still incoming and ougoing tides, and the water has an unmistakably salty taste. Thus, every reason for the Oosterschelde to be proclaimed a Nationl Park. Under the water’s surface, there’s a huge richness of plants and aquatic animals. This sea-arm is considered to be the nursery of the Noordzee. This means that certain parts are closed to visitors (see map). The water is very clear, which means that scuba-divers can greatly enjoy being part of this underwater world. At ebb tide, plants become suddenly visible, old agricultural and fishing harbours are drained of their water-covering, and the stakes of the fyke nets stick up out of the water. With the incoming tide, the Westerschelde fills up again. Sailors, surfers, fishermen and skippers of motorised boats can have great fun on the Oosterschelde. There are more than enough places to berth and small harbours.

Zierikzee wears the crown as a public attraction, but also villages like Stavenisse and Sint Annaland are well worth visiting. Navigating the Oosterschelde requires expertise and experience because of the currents. Near to the Oosterschelde Dam, the currents are definitely dangerous. This area is closed, and it’s clearly marked as such.
