In 1568 the Dutch wanted to shake off the Spanish occupiers. In that year a fierce freedom fight. Biervliet was a strategic point in those days. The former island lay on the border of Vlaanderen, which was ruled by the Spanish, and the Netherlands. This cycle route and brochure tells you the story of the Geuzen in and around Biervliet.
