Schouwen-Duiveland
foto foto Cycle route

General

The island Schouwen used to stretch from the dune area in the west to the Schouwse dike. This dike lays between Zierikzee and Brouwershaven. Through this you can still recognize the eastern border of the island. You could see the island Duiveland and Dreischor from this dike.

Nice to know:
Brouwershaven flourished in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Rotterdam harbour was difficult to reach because the waterway was blocked by sand. In Brouwershaven the goods were loaded onto smaller ships. In 1872 the new waterway (Nieuwe Waterweg) was opened and the role of Brouwershaven was cancelled. Nowadays Brouwershaven is a water sport centre.
