The flood disaster of 1953 started on the night of the 31st of January / 1st of February. A Continuous north westerly storm coincided with the spring flood tide. Most people were asleep at the time.
In Ouwerkerk there is a flood disaster museum. The museum is located in one of the four caissons that were used to close the last hole in the dike. These caissons and there surroundings were declared a National Monument Flood Disaster 1953.
Facts and figures flood disaster 1953:
141.000 hectare was flooded.
49.000 houses and farms were struck.
8250 houses and farms were destroyed or heavily damaged.
>100.000 people had to be evacuated.
1835 people died.
