Historical museum "de Bevelanden"

General

Now an historical museum, this building dates to the Middle Ages. It was once a convent for the Black Sisters. It houses temporary exhibitions as well as permanent ones. One of the latter is ‘Met Man en Macht’ ( ‘With Might and Main’). It highlights the militia who are immortalized in the valiant military history of the Beveland region. The exhibit ‘Blinken en Verzinken’ (‘Shining and Sunken’) depicts the history of land and water. On the right side of the room, the acquisition of land, prosperity and wealth. On the left, the loss of land, the poverty and the ‘drowned’ villages. ‘Shining’ are the golden corn, swaying in the wind, the gold and silver, the glass and porcelain and the precious books. ‘Sunken’ are the pitiful remains of what were once flourishing villages, with potsherds, bits of metal, bone, brick and fragments of glass.
