A remarkable area of Staatsbosbeheer (Forestry Commission) on the most southern point of Walcheren:
Rammekenshoek and the former Fort Rammekens, near the village Ritthem. Ever since the building was built in 1547 this solid construction has been a refuge for many occupiers and liberators but also many animals and plants.
Around the fort is Rammekenshoek, a creek are that originated after the bombings in 1944. On the outskirts of the dike there is one of the few remaining areas of mudflats where the typical sounds of the water birds can be heard.
Straatsbosbeheer has developed a walking-hiking route; The Fort Rammekens route (blue posting). This route is also on map 29 from Staatsbosbeheer.
