General
Veere originated in the last quarter of the 13th century as a neighbouring town on the Walcherse side of the ferry connection with Campen on the island of Noord-Beveland.
The rise and prosperity of Campveere (named after the ferry that sailed to Campen and later was abbreviated to Veere) was due to the position of the families Van Borsele and Van Bougondie who lived in the castle Sandenburgh nearby.
In the 13th and 14th century Veere grew into an important fishing and trade place. In 1541 the town was officially appointed as a Scottish launch place for the low lands, especially for wool. The Scottish merchants in Veere received many privileges for this.
Since 1974 Veere is a protected town. This applies to the town, a wide area around it and the city wall.
Many old houses were restored in the sixties and seventies of the last century. By taking this walk through Veere you will enjoy the historical town of Veere.
This route is a part of the publishing ‘Veere, oude Waterstad. There are 2 routes set out.
