Tussen Sluis en Sint Anna ter Muiden
West Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, Zeeuwse- VlaanderenGeneral
The fortified town of Sluis had a rich and interesting history with many wonderful, but also less wonderful moments. The history of Sluis goes back to the 12th century. Sluis was then on the banks of De Zwin, a sea arm which connected the mighty trading city of Brugge to the open sea. Because of this unique position, Sluis developed into one of the most loveliest and strongest towns in the county of Vlaanderen.
Sint Anna ter Muiden is older than Sluis. The Zwin story of Sluis can also be applied here. The robust 14th century church tower remembers us of that glorious age. Probably it once was used as a light house. The restored houses on the triangular shaped market square date from the late 17th and 18th century. In 1967 the whole square became a protected monument. The smallest town in Netherland breathes a friendly atmosphere and is much loved by artist and painters.
