Before Terneuzen existed, the nearby town of Biervliet already had city rights. Biervliet is now a historical place with 5 strongholds and many monumental buildings. The route takes you through authentic Biervliet. On the way you will come across silent witnesses of the years gone by long ago. The Dutch reformed church from 1659 with its stained leaded glass, windmill “de Harmonie”, the old vicarage and the old town hall with the herring as weathercock. There is a looped shaped route you can take to the village forest ”het Poortbos”. In short it is a lovely route through medieval ‘Bierfletum’ with a guaranteed meeting with Willem Beukelszoon, the inventor of Haringkaken (a method of processing herring at sea).
