The Noordgouwepolder en the Zonnemairepolder developed after the water Sunnonmeri, a branch of the water de Gouwe, separating Schouwen from Duiveland, silted up.
The village Zonnemaire was founded after the inpoldering in 1401. Sunnonmeri is a corruption of Sonnemaar or Sunnemare and that is how the name evolved into Zonnemaire. The coat of arms for the village depicts the sun rising out of the water (meer). The reformed church was built in 1867, to replace a 15th century church building. The laying of the foundation stone took place on the 24th of April of that year. It was layed by craftsman Mr Jacob Moolenburgh.

DIJKHUISES
The dike houses that stand north of Zonnemaire on the Rietdijk date from the19th century. They were built by wealthy farmers for their farm workers. The ground had little value as the slope on the dike was no good for growing anything. The workers who were poorly paid still had to pay rent.

The small established city Bommenede (that was once Dutch Territory) suffered greatly from the aggression of the Spanish in 1575 during the eighty years war. In October of that year twelve cannons bombarded the town for three days. The heavy apposition could not prevent the Spanish from winning. Later nature took over. After a severe storm on 26th of January 1682, and the damage caused, The Staten van Holland Bommenede decided to let the surrounding polders flood. Two years later the rest of the town was cleared. The name Bommenede gave its name to a person called Bomne.

CENTRUM BROUWERSHAVEN
In1286 Floris the fifth, count of Holland, bought the deeds of the land from Jan van Renesse and founded a village with a harbour. At first he called the place Brijdorpersluis. In a bill of 1318 the name Brouwershaven was used for the first time.
Brouwershaven has not grown much, but nether the less the village received city rights in 1403 from Duke Albrecht van Beieren, the former count of Holland and Zeeland.
The place didn`t grow as much as they hoped. In 1599 the town hall at the side of the market was enlarged and was given a beautiful façade in Vlaamse renaissance style. The motto above the main door means; “the law is the protector of the republic”.
You can tell is it was a court house by the statue of Lady Justice. But also the board of orphanages sat here. The symbol of this is the statue of a woman with 2 children. She represents charity.
Because Jacob Cats was born here, in1577, they placed a statue of him in the market in1829. Stone statues were rare in the Netherlands at that time. Even though it was a place with just 1500 residents, it is clear to see it is more than a simple village. The church, near to the village centre would not be out of place in a big city. The building was built in stages between 1325 and 1650 and is the largest church building on the island.

DE WEELDIJK
Every small lake is the result of a breach in the dike. The force of the water smoothed out a deep basin which was difficult to seal. So a new dike was built against the breach. It is unknown when this lake formed, but it must have happened between 1401 and 1735. In the first year the land south of the dike was inpoldered, the Noordgouwepolder. In the last year the land to the north, the Zonnemairepolder.
33. At crossroads stay left. PP.
34. Cross Zuidweg to Noordgouwe (village shop).
NOORDGOUWE
After the dike was built on the northern part of the water the Grouwe in 1735. It was called Noordgouwepolder, people came to live there. It is known that the building of the church began in 1462, the building was consecrated in the name of de Drie Koningen (three kings). Noordgouwe is the best presented ring village of the island. Small but perfect, in1987 it received the status of ”protected village”, which means that the village must remain unchanged.
35. Past the church and enter Oosterweegje.
36. At the T-junction left onto Dreischorsedijk.
POLDER DREISCHOR
The polder Dreischor on your right side is a very old polder. Worthy it is too, the polder dips to the right so is therefore lower than the one on the left.

HET HUIS TE DREISCHOR.
The tall house you see when you enter the village of Dreischor, was built in 1956 in the place where the slot (castle) Windenburg once stood. This was built in 1476 and in 1837 demolished. The spot remained vacant until after the floods, when they thought it would be a good place to build a house for the Mayor. Alas in 1961 two municipalities joined and Dreischor became part of Brouwershaven. Since then the house has been privately owned. The house was built in the style of “Hofwijk” the country house built by Constantijn Huygens in 1651 at Voorburg.
42. At the crossroads near the shop turn left; Zuidstraat.
DE RING VAN DREISCHOR.
As well as Noordgouwe Dreischor also has the status of “Protected village” it received it in 1970. On the ring over the road from the beautiful gothic church, is the former `plaatsenhuus’ the town hall. Above the door hangs a plaque with the inscription ”Do well and fear no one”. In the simple two story building Hallen Kerk is a richly decorated grave monument to the patriarchs of the18th century, Cornelis and Johan Ockerse and their cousin Pieter Mogge. The door of the church is usually open during the day, so it is easy to look round.
