HET DIJKWATER
The water you pass on your left and right is all that remains of a far wider waterway, that once formed the shipping link between the Grevelingen and the Oosterschelde. De Gouwe separates Schouwen from Duiveland. To the north of Zierikzee the river splits into the ‘Dijkwater’ and the ‘Sunonmeri’. The polder of Dreischor has water on both sides. At the division of the waterway the tidal flow ceased, the depth of the water changed. In 1401 and again in 1735 the Sunonmeri was inpoldered. The Dijkwater remained open. There are several harbours: de Staart (Sirjansland) and Beldert (Dreischor). Stevensluis was once a settlement next to a sluis (lock). East of Stevensluis lies the loading and unloading small harbour of Nieuwe Veer. The currents became more treacherous and from the17th century shipping could get no farther than Dreischor. After the floods the northern side was completely dammed, you can see the dike clearly from Grevelingen. The Dijkwater is a nature reserve where in the spring various types of wild orchids grow. It is a lovely place to walk.

12. Turn right on to Adriaan Oudsweg.
13. Left on to de Blindeweg in the direction of the windmill.

MOLEN AEOLUS.
The windmill at Dreischor was built in 1739, at first it was called Oostmolen and Aeolus, then in 1941 the name changed to Koekoek. In 1971 the name Aeolus was restored. The name Aeorlus is the name the Greek god Zeus gave to the controler of the winds. Aeolus lived in the cliffs on the mythical island Aeolia, where the winds were locked up. He then sent them all over the world.
Up untill 1962 the mill was a working mill but then it did not require the services of Aeolus anymore. After 1962 it was used as a home, but around 2000 it was completely restored including the grinding stones. A volunteer miller sometimes works here.

HET HUIS TE DREISCHOR.
The tall house you see when you enter the village of Dreischor, was built in 1956 in the place where the slot (castle) Windenburg once stood. This was built in 1476 and in 1837 demolished. The spot remained vacant until after the floods, when they thought it would be a good place to build a house for the Mayor. Alas in 1961 two municipalities joined and Dreischor became part of Brouwershaven. Since then the house has been privately owned. The house was built in the style of “Hofwijk” the country house built by Constantijn Huygens in 1651 at Voorburg.

26. At the end of de Donkereweg turn left onto the dike and cross de Kloosterweg.
27. Follow the Schouwse dike to Zierikzee.

KAASKENSWATER
The Schouwse dike was originally a water control dike. As you travel towards Zierikzee the Grouwe flows on your left. In 1610 a stone dam was constructed and inpoldering followed.
This left the once wide channel only to be a small waterway which irrigates the adjoining polders. Later it served for drainage for the harbour of Zierikzee.
Halfway on your right is a long stretch of water, het Kaaskenswater. It is unknown what it is named after. We do know is that the water originated in the 80 year war when the dike was breached.
The southern of Schouwsedijk was called Leverdijk, this because up until the 18th century there were many ware houses where they stored barrels of cod liver oil. The smell was so bad that they had to do this on the outskirts of the village.
