Tholen is one of the most peaceful regions of Zeeland. This is because of its isolated location
You will be surprised by old tree lined dikes, elegant towns, windmills and a coast line with inlets. Tholen consisted of separate islands that were covered by dikes before the year 1220. Over time the channels between the islands became dammed and cultivated.
Nice to know:
Centuries long Scherpenisse and Sint Maartensdijk were connected by the “pluimpot” to open sea. Because of the Deltaworks the ‘Pluimpot’ was damned of at the estuary.
