General
After the flood disaster of1953 Zeeland changed dramatically. Inlets were dammed, dikes were strengthened and new roads laid. The Oosterschelde too did not remain untouched, the Oosterscheldekering ,the Zeelandbrug and the Oesterdam are just some examples. But one thing did not happen: total damming of the river. Through the building of the Oosterscheledekering the tide still flows in the river. Birds can still feed on the mud flats and the cultivation of mussels and oysters continue.
Nice to know:
At one time the Kanaal door Zuid-Beveland was the busiest inland waterway in Western Europe. The waiting time at the “Oude Sluizen”(old locks) in Wemeldinge could sometimes be 5 hours. With the construction of the of the new Schelde-Rijn canal the shipping no longer has to wait.
This cycle route is part of the ANWB/VVV cycle guide Zuid Zeeland. In this guide are seventeen signposted routes .
