This route goes through the oldest centre of Tholen. Round the year 1220 Tholen stood on the then south side of the united islands of Scherpenisse and Poortvliet. You ride through the quiet and spacious landscape of Tholen. The spectacle of the ships gliding by on the Schelde-Rijnkanaal is definitely worth the effort.
Nice to know:
The Tholen coastline is always threatened by the sea. It did not always need a storm, even when the sea was calm and the water low a dike would collapse. They call this `dijkvallen’. The places in the dikes where previously the sea had gouged out trenches were vulnerable, as the dikes were built on sand they collapsed.
