FIKS Themaroute: Bunkerroute

The bunkers you pass are reminders of the ’Atlantic wall’ constructed by the Germans in the second world war. The German occupiers built a line of defence that stretched from the far north of Norway to Biarritz in France. Walcheren and Breskens were heavily defended to enable them to blockade the world famous harbour at Antwerp. This diverse route takes you past the remaining bunkers on Walcheren and to the two war museums.
Nice to know:
After the liberation many of the bunkers were demolished to make way for the rebuilding of the country. Roughly 80 remain, many are to be seen near Dishoek and Koudekerke.
