In the Zak of Zuid Beveland there are three sign posted routes developed under the name Boerenlandroute. You will cycle through a landscape of small and large polders, enclosed by century old dikes. The characteristic old land undulating meadows, fresh water pools and the hawthorn hedges you will see near the village of Nisse.
Nice to know:
The “koedijk” is an old dike that became an inner dike in 1325. The unpaved dike was never made any higher and gives you a very good impression of a medieval dike. The dikes then were mostly no higher than 1 or 2 metres. They had a very gentle slope on the sea side. The height difference is striking: left of the dike the land has been raised higher by mud and is higher than the old land of Nisse on the right of the dike.
