Cycle route
General
This cycle trip goes from Veere to Vlissingen and back. The canal through Walcheren joins Middelburg to Veere and Vlissingen.
This canal was constructed between 1870 and 1873. Middelburg had to have a connection with the open sea again.
Now pleasure boats use the canal. You cycle over hunting paths, dikes and lovely cycle paths.
Nice to know:
The VOC( East India Company) building on the Maisbaai is a reminder of the prosperous times of the 16th century.
Middelburg was then one of the most important harbours in the Netherlands. Especially in the trading of wine, wool and slaves, which bought the city great wealth.
This cycle route is part of the ANWB/VVV cycle guide North Zeeland and Goeree Overflakkee. In this guide are seventeen signposted routes.
