General
Fort Rammekens (1547) was of strategic importance in the Golden ages. All ships going to Middelburg, but also to the wealthy Vlaamse towns, came by this fort. Zeeland knew great wealth in the Golden ages. Many churches, storehouses, country estates and traders homes are evidence of this.
Nice to know:
Oost-Souburg has a restored city wall. This wall was constructed in the 9th century to protect the villagers against attacks by the Vikings. Outside the wall there was a moat, inside there were several farms.
This cycle route is part of the ANWB/VVV cycle guide North Zeeland and Goeree Overflakkee. In this guide are seventeen signposted routes.
