Vliedbergen in het Zeeuwse Landschap
Walcheren
Cycle route
General
Most of the man made mounds dotted around the area date from the 11th and 12th centuries. Protection against flooding was not the only reason for the construction of the hills. They were built for defence, because at that time bows and arrows were used to ward off enemies.
The cycle route followed using the cycle junction system (FIKS) takes you past several of the hills in Walcheren.
Nice to know:
There are 20 mounds visible in the landscape. Once there were more than 60.
The junctions you must follow are described in the book “Vliedbergen in het Zeeuwse landschap” (ISBN 978-90-77525-14-2).
There are two cycle routes which pass mounds in Zeeland.
