Zeeland Surfspot
The wind tugs at your sail. You hitch yourself into your trapeze and set your feet firmly into the foot- straps. It’s your technique against the power of nature. Whilst the wind speeds you over the water, you are utterly convinced – you’re in your element against the elements. You were born to fly!
The Delta has all of the ingredients which surfers are crazy about: sun, wind and water. Nowhere in Western Europe is the supply of these ingredients so concentrated as it is in the hotspots of the Delta area. Fresh water or salt, fast-flowing or still-waters: it just depends on what you’re looking for.
The Netherlands is, naturally, not a country where the incomingwaves roll over a a reef, of where there is a constant trade wind blowing. Nevertheless – the Netherlands is a super surfing country!Experts use the waves of the North Sea for innumerable movements. Sea-surfing is an experience in itself, but don’t overestimate your own capabilities. The waves (breakers) can work as a ‘washing-machine’. And that’s why there is an unwritten rule amongst surfers, that you keep an eye on each other. Always be aware of your own responsibility and check all of your equipment before you enter the water. The locals know the water, and they are always happy to give you good advice. For those who like calm water, and for beginners, there are many inland lakes in the Delta area.
On these inland waters, there aren’t any waves that suddenly rob you of your equipment, and leave you behind, feeling shattered! On the Veerse Meer, beginners can make their first shaky attempts on a board belonging to the surf school, if they want to. The Haringvliet and the Grevelingenmeer are popular places for the speed freaks. With a south-westerly wind, the height of the breakers can be pretty enormous!
