Veerse Meer
The Veerse Meer used to be a turbulent sea-arm, but since the enormous flooding in 1953, the entrance to the Noordzee is barricaded by dams and dikes. Such a disaster as in 1953, must never happen again. However, this has resulted in no more incoming and outgoing tide, as well as an end to the hustle and bustle of fishing boats coming in and out of the Veere harbour. But this was also a beginning to the increasing interests of tourism. Thanks to the presence of numerous pleasurecraft, the maritime activities on the lake have never been lost. The lake forms the passageway through to the Kanaal door Walcheren.
This canal brings you to historic Middelburg and to maritime Vlissingen. You can also sail to the Oosterschelde, via the lock in the Zandkreekdam. Picturesque places such as Kortgene, Kamperland and, of course, Veere all help to give the lake its extra charm. The water is surrounded by nature reserves, camping sites and jetties where you can moor 24 hours per day. In the lake, there are numerous desert islands, where you can also just simply moor your boat.
The waters of the Veerse Meer stretch out over a distance of 22 kilometres, and are an absolute eldorado for surfers, canoers, yachtsmen and women, water-skiers and fisherman. The shallow shores of the lake make it ideal for families with children. The quality of the lake has been enormously improved since the introduction of a water-drain nearby Kats, through which seawater flows. Those who enjoy diving, will have already noticed this. There are enormous trout swimming around, and new marine-life is continually being discovered.
