Water Everywhere

In Zeeland you find water everywhere. Not strange, because almost a third of the province consists of water. It is not just any water: Zeeland has the sea, inlets, lakes, canals, creeks, weirs and naturally the National Park Oosterschelde.

Zeeland is of course the watersport holiday province that many watersport fanatics have discovered. Whether you are a diver, a sport fisherman, surfer or a competition sailor there is always water that will suit you.

Take for example the Northsea. Here the sailing is fantastic, with a motorboat or fishing in the surf, canoeing, or surfing. But just as on the Oosterschelde the tide and the wind can be calm one minute and become a raging storm the next. So always have someone with you with experience.

That applies to the Westerschelde too with its very busy shipping lanes. Long slender inland barges, but also imposing giant container ships, which sail very close by.

National Park Oosterschelde is definitely worth a visit, under water and above. Divers from all over the world wax lyrical about the water quality and all the things to see under the water. But also above the water there is plenty to enjoy, from the inquisitive seals to the porpoises playing in the water.

The Grevelingen is the biggest and clearest salt water lake in Europe. It is very popular with divers, yachtsmen, and surfers who enjoy the space and calm waters. Nothing is nicer than to moor your boat on one of the islands and spend the night.

You can also do that on the Veerse Meer. But don’t forget the tiny harbours with lovely villages, always a place to shop and enjoy a drink on one of the terraces.

We have not talked much about all the other delights Zeeland has to offer on the water, all the canals, creeks, weirs, mudflats and green banks. Maybe they are not all to your taste but there are special nature areas with unusual plants and animals too.
