Cycling from Vlissingen to Domburg

Written by: Zeeland.com

One way of discovering the beautiful coastline between Vlissingen and Domburg is by bike. Marleen, who manages www.bijzonderplekje.nl, and her daughter took to their e-bikes and braved the elements. If you’re curious to know how their adventure along this beautiful stretch of coast went, read about it here!

Coastal route by bike

The cycling route from Vlissingen to Domburg takes in a magnificent stretch of coastline. Given the blustery winds and the code-amber weather warnings, we’re somewhat hesitant about starting out on our cycling adventure. When we put this to the owner of the cycle store in Vlissingen, Harm’s Fietsen, it’s hard for him not to laugh. He simply replies, ‘It’s always windy in Zeeland’.

Code amber or not, there’s no excuse for us not to jump on our bikes, especially given the fact that we’ve rented e-bikes. We catch second breath on the outskirts of Vlissingen, with the cycleway now heading into the countryside in the shelter of the dunes, past read beds, ponds and meadows. You don’t need to take note of the signs: just follow the dunes and nothing can go wrong.

Stops between Vlissingen and Domburg

The cycle path follows the outline of the coast. There are so many great places to stop en route to Domburg that it would be a shame not to take this coastal route at a leisurely pace. Along the way, we pass several openings in the dunes allowing access to miles of beach. Bikes can be parked at the bottom of the steps. It’s just a short climb through the dunes and you’re on the beach! You can also stop off and enjoy an ice-cream in Zoutelande, sample a Zeeuwse bolus in Westkapelle or picnic along the shore. Before you reach Domburg you will pass the lighthouse known as ‘’t Lage Licht’.

In Domburg

Having arrived in Domburg - approx. 22 kilometres distant from Vlissingen - we find a spot for to park our bikes before exploring one of the Netherlands’ most picturesque seaside resorts. This is largely thanks to its expansive beaches, its gastronomy and the numerous spa facilities. There’s always something fun to do here.

Not long and it’s time to be heading back. If you’d rather return to Vlissingen by way of a different route, head inland and take the route via Aagtekerke, Meliskerke, Biggekerke and Dishoek through Walcheren
