The purpose of data processing

We collect your personal data for the following purposes:

  1. To make the features you wish to use available to you on the website or Zeeland App
Various features on the website and Zeeland App require data storage (e.g. for saving your favourites, and for executing certain searches). Provided you have given permission to do so, location data is used. The Zeeland App has different features that use your location data once you have given your permission.
    - The location of your device is used to support the routing functionality: The routing functionality uses the location of your device to show your position on the map. When you are cycling and your phone is on stand-by, we can tell you know when you are approaching the next junction on a cycling network, or provide you local route-related information.
    - If you participate in the mobility ‘Traffic in Zeeland’ study, and have given your express permission, your location data will be stored in the database of a research partner with whom a processor agreement has been concluded in order to ensure secure processing of location data. The data will exclusively be used within the framework of mobility research in the province of Zeeland.
  2. About your participation in follow-up research: You’ll be asked in the Zeeland App if you agree to this. It is part of the ‘Mobility in Zeeland’ (aka ‘Traffic in Zeeland’) research project. If you agree and give your email address, it will be held in an encrypted database and linked to a unique code and data about your mobility. We shall share these with a research partner who will be able to see if you were a panel member in the previous year. If so, they will send your personal profile to your email.
  3. To execute an order placed through the website webshop
If we do not have your data, we shall not know where to send the products you ordered. We use the data you entered to honour our agreements with you.
  4. To maintain the profile you wish to make and have made
You can save your favourites with your profile. We save that data so that everything will be available to you when you log in again. Furthermore, if you so wish, we will also send you newsletters. To do so, we need to save your e-mail address and newsletter preference.
  5. To carry out analyses of the use of the website and Zeeland App to gain a deeper understanding of development in the tourist sector in Zeeland
We use Google Analytics and Hotjar to analyse the use of the website and the Zeeland App. To this end, we collect data, including your personal data. The data are collected by means of cookies, for which we require your permission. Please change your browser or mobile device settings accordingly. For analysis purposes, we use, for example, the pages you visit and the associated tags, fields you complete, for example, in the experience builder, or your hotel search data. This data provides a picture of what you like or are looking for, and is also used in our periodical analyses at higher levels.

The basic reason for using your personal data are the permission you granted at our request and the implementation of our agreement to provide you a reasonably functional website and App in your own interest. We have no commercial interest in using your data, but have taken the necessary measures to protect your need for privacy. You may thus object to any reported misuse or linkage of your data which may affect your freedom of choice and manage your own browser settings.

We also use the Facebook Pixel on our website. With its help, we can keep track of what users do after they see or click on a Facebook advertisement. This enables us to monitor the effectiveness of Facebook ads for purposes of statistics and market research. Data collected in this way is anonymous to us, which means we cannot see the personal data of individual users. However, this data is saved and processed by Facebook. Facebook can connect this data with your Facebook account and use it for its own advertising purposes, in accordance with Facebook’s Data Policy which can be found at You can allow Facebook and its partners to place ads on and outside of Facebook. A cookie can also be saved on your device for these purposes.

Your rights as the data subject

This is a privacy statement about the use of your data. You can influence the way in which we collect your data. You have a right of access, a right to correct and remove, and you can limit our use of your data. In some cases you may object to the use of your data. Lastly, you are entitled to transfer data.

This means that you can ask us (see our contact details above) to specify which of your personal data we process. We will answer you in line with the applicable legal rules. You have the right of correction or removal of your data. This can largely be managed through your profile and browser or mobile device settings. If we requested your permission to use your data, you can always withdraw this permission. This does not affect the use of your data prior to the moment at which you withdraw your permission. You also have the right to oppose the use of your data for direct marketing purposes. Furthermore, you may ask us to provide you or another party with information in a machine-readable and interoperable format, for example, because you want to transfer your profile. We will treat such a request seriously. In part, your data is under your control. In the email you’ll receive with our newsletter, for example, you’ll see how to manage your preferences and modify, complete or remove data. Please let us know if you want to exercise certain rights (see our contact details above). Should you feel that we are not handling your data in a legitimate way, please contact us. If this does not produce the desired result, you can always file a complaint with the Personal Data Authority.

Disclosure to third parties and transfer

It is true that we do share your data, as mentioned below. We offer you the use of the website and Zeeland App, but we did not develop all this ourselves. We also do not manage and support these services ourselves. We are assisted by third parties, which therefore automatically process your data, but only for that purpose. All the parties that help us work according to our instructions. We have reached a ‘processor agreement’ with these parties.

The aim of the website and Zeeland App is to promote Zeeland. VVV Zeeland shares data with the Coastal Tourism Knowledge Centre (Kenniscentrum Kusttoerisme). This party uses the data solely for statistical and research purposes. They only receive anonymised data so they cannot trace back any of the data to the persons who provided the data.

It should be noted that we previously mentioned in our objectives that with your permission we share your data with our contracted research partners who store them in their database. Your data are used exclusively for the purposes of research on mobility in Zeeland.

Further, we may engage third parties for marketing activities or for the delivery of your purchase. To this end, these parties will require your data (e.g. a printing company, email processing company or a mail delivery company). We will only provide your personal information to supervisors and authorities if we are legally required to do so.

Personal data may also be passed on to parties in countries outside the European Economic Area. If we do this directly ourselves, we will take the necessary steps to ensure that your data is well protected as possible.

We attach great importance to the security of your personal information. We have therefore taken appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your personal data against loss and any form of unlawful processing. That means that there is always a secure (SSL) connection while you are using the entire platform and all functionalities, that we have a privacy policy in place stating who has access to your data and when, and that we make backups of files, install updates in a timely manner, and use anti-virus programs.

Terms of storage

We retain your data for as long as you have an account with us. We save your data for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes for which we collect the data. In this respect, we would like to draw your attention to the following. Uninstalling the Zeeland App does not mean that all your data have been removed from our database. We assume that uninstalling the app does not automatically mean that you want to delete your profile. If you want to delete your profile and other data, please send us a removal request. Our contact details can be found elsewhere on this page.

Data storage in the Zeeland App research project ‘Mobility in Zeeland'

During the research project ‘Mobility in Zeeland’, we shall never collect or store email addresses, unique codes or mobility data. That will be done by research partners. The agency known as ‘Sentiance’ will collect and store such data only during its research work, before handing it over to the Coastal Tourism Knowledge Centre, KCKT (mentioned above). The Eneniq agency will collect and store email addresses and the unique code only during its research work, before handing it over to the KCKT. The latter has a data-processing role, but only keeps this data for at most half a year after publication of the research results and then removes it – or after the expiry of a legally binding period. If you wish your data to be removed earlier, you can send us a request to remove it. Our contact details can be found elsewhere on this page.

Changes to this privacy statement

This privacy statement is subject to change. If possible, we will try to inform you personally of any fundamental change to this privacy statement significantly affecting your rights or the permission you gave us. Please check the reference number and date of this privacy statement to verify whether this is the version you read earlier.
