The so-called State-Spanish lines are the foundation for this Eastern Zeeland-Flanders route by bike (43,2 km). Journey through the turmoil of history, border country-style, along old fortresses, dike lines and redoubts.
In the 1568-1648 Eighty Years’ War, both sides (the Northern Netherlands and the Spanish crown) were ensconced behind defensive lines. Some remnants of these State-Spanish Lines are to be found near Axel.
The 60-metre-tall Axel water tower is sure to stand out – why don’t you clamber up, the viewing point at 50 metres has spectacular views waiting for you!
