Take a walk (4 km) around Aardenburg, Zeeland’s oldest town. Often called ‘frogtown’ (kikkerstad), it is situated in Zeeland-Flanders. All this froggy stuff will accost you: there’s a fountain and you might be overtaken on the ramparts by some rare tree frogs. Do they have freedom of the city?
It was some 2,000 years ago that the Romans built their castellum in Aardenburg. The Archaeological Museum has interesting excavations for you, including from the Middle Ages, when Aardenburg was a proper fortified town.
The remarkable past of this town is not confined to the museum, though. Murals depicting historical tales are along the walk, not to mention a model of the Roman castellum and the traced outlines of a Roman arch building.
