The hamlet of Groot (big) Valkenisse lies hidden behind the imposingly tall dunes of Walcheren. Campers take heart, this is a go-to spot combining gorgeous nature-bound camping and an easy walk to the sea. The place is named after the local 17th century farm of ‘Valkenisse’, incidentally the inspiration for Klein (little) Valkenisse, too. Size does matter then, if you’re a hamlet that is.
In Groot Valkenisse, agriculture was the main income generator, as the landed farms and green fields around the village still tell you. These very surroundings, paired with the sea at a stone’s throw, are what has given a strong boost of tourism to the hamlet.
The dunes – the highest in the country – provide a shelter of sorts for Groot Valkenisse, with the beaches being awarded the so-called Blue Flag. This is the international hallmark of environmentally sound clean beaches. Groot Valkenisse and the area around it is full of campsites and parks with holiday homes and cottages.
Nearby seaside resort Zoutelande and the towns of Vlissingen and Middelburg just down the road add yet more appeal to this spot. Let your footsteps (or bike) carry you, through the dunes, to any or all of these places.
