Despite being so far north, Zeeland’s mild climate is well suited to growing grapes, which results in some delicious local wines.
Zeeland’s wine regions
Winemaking in the province is mainly concentrated in two areas: the Zak van Zuid-Beveland area and the island of Schouwen-Duiveland. Zuid-Beveland’s fruit-growing region has a microclimate that’s perfect for growing grapes, but the winemakers here also like to use other kinds of fruit as alternatives to grapes. You’ll find plenty of wineries with shops that are open regularly, so why not stop in and sample some of the local flavours.
Winery De Kleine Schorre
For Wijnhoeve de Kleine Schorre (Wine Farm de Kleine Schorre), you’ll have to head a little further north, to the traditional circular village of Dreischor on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland. There, you will find a vineyard, established in 2001, that has put Zeeland on the wine-making map. This vineyard grows grape varieties that best combine with Zeeland’s speciality seafood: Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Rivaner and Auxerrois.
With 10 hectares of grapevines, the Kleine Schorre wine farm is one of the largest in Zeeland. It offers wine tasting tours in summer and group tours by appointment all year round.
