A dizzying 62 clicks (km, that is), this is a route for the serious cyclist. Beware the wind doesn’t blow you away, or over, on the Stormvloedkering (surge tide barrier), though you’ll have it behind you on the Zeelandbrug bridge. Or vice versa – ha!
At 37,000 hectares, the Oosterschelde is the largest National Park in the Netherlands. Seaweed, lobster and anemones paint a rainbow of wonders below the water’s surface. Thousands of birds gather here to forage on dried-up sand flats, come low tide. If you’re lucky, you might spot a seal – or two.
Polders and areas of nature take turns wowing you, as you whizz by, gears up, head down. As a rule, the route uses the outer-dike cycle paths, for the ultimate in stunning water views. You can brave the water on one of the Oosterschelde ferries, too, if you run out of cycling steam.
