Churches in Zeeland

Religion has a very strong presence and place in Zeeland. Even in the smallest villages you could very well see several churches. The buildings vary immensely in style, from a simple building to a basilica. In earlier times, their size and the décor spoke volumes about the wealth of the village or town.

Keeping faith

In Zeeland, there are both Protestant and Catholic churches. Each faith group has its own separate buildings in the same town or village. In fact, some villages were named after their church, as were Biggekerke and Ouwerkerk. For a lord of the manor in days gone by, a church building was seen as a status symbol.

Protestant Reformation

The churches seen today in Zeeland are largely survivors of a 16th century outbreak of Protestant iconoclasm known as the ‘Beeldenstorm’, a time of much destruction and pillage. The exact number of churches in Zeeland today is not known.

Looking at churches

One visit to Zeeland will not suffice to look at all the churches here. Some recommendations: the basilica in Hulst, chosen by the Plaza radio programme as the best church in the Netherlands, partly because of its stained glass windows and towers. It is the only basilica in the country, other sights include churches in Veere and Brouwershaven.

Big equalled beautiful

Sometimes a church building may seem disproportionately large for where they stand. You may think such thoughts of the Grote Kerk in Veere or the Grote or Sint Nicolaaskerk in Brouwershaven. Yet in the bygone days of prosperity in these trading centres, a church of these dimensions was not at all out of place.

Top monument

Standing above the oldest town in Zeeland, Aardenburg, is the Sint Baafskerk. Being the only Dutch church built in the Schelde Gothic style, it certainly belongs in the list of the top monuments of the Netherlands.
