Beach wheelchair

A day on the beach in Zeeland is a whole bundle of fun. For everyone, with a restriction or not. The province does its utmost to make our beaches accessible for visitors with restricted mobility, so that people can enjoy their day in the sand. There are reserved parking spaces at the specially designed entrances to many beach paths, which have a hard (concrete) surface down to the sand. Some have dedicated toilets. And, to open up the entire beach, there are special beach wheelchairs available.

Enjoy a day out with a beach wheelchair. We call it a beachcomber (‘strandjutter’). You can borrow one for free. Easy to push, its soft and wide wheels carry you easily over the loose, coarse sand. It can even cope with sea water, so you can head out into the breakers – whoa, watch out, now, not too far! Your beachcomber awaits you at several coast resorts and beach pavilions.

Hire/rental points for electric wheelchairs

On the islands of Noord-Beveland, Walcheren and Schouwen-Duiveland some lifeguard stations have electrically-driven wheelchairs for hire for a small fee.

Another option for disabled visitors to Dishoek is the ‘gator’ pick-up service for point-to-point journeys. You’ll be driven in this open diesel beach buggy, through the dunes and along the beach. Bookings at the lifeguard station 0118-551341.

Are you up to the challenge of heading off the beaten track? Then you’re ready to drive your own off-road wheelchair called the CadWeazle, steering with your handheld joystick. Enjoy exploring the beach, the woods, and along the unsurfaced paths and tracks – you’ll get to see places you thought you would never go to! It’s your own multi-terrain vehicle. Rentals – high season only – are from the local foundation called ‘Naturally Accessible’ (‘Natuurlijk Toegang’) from these locations:

Off Road Solutions in Oostkapelle

For people with a functional restriction, Off Road Solutions rent out a wide range of equipment for visiting beaches, forests and other nature areas, from their base in Oostkapelle. A special one is the Tiralo, named by its French designer to mean ‘pull to the water’. It’s a sit-up stretcher-like buggy (pullable/pushable), and just about guarantees having fun outdoors. Because it floats with buoys on its frame, you can really go out into the water. Can’t get any closer to swimming than this!
