About this location

The Sint Barbarakerk is a Catholic emergency church from 1950 that was never replaced in a later period. The church is decorated with beautiful carvings and sculptures, made by emeritus pastor and sculptor Omer Gielliet. The images of this artist can be found in many places in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Many of his statues stand and hang in and around the church, in Europastraat, including a crucifix made from a 10,000-year-old tree trunk. On the facade of the church are portraits of celebrities such as Pope John XXIII, Bishop Bekkers, Nelson Mandela, Gandhi and Martin Luther King. Along the path to the church are six sculptures and to the right of the path are the twelve apostles.
