Schouwen-Duiveland

With the Oosterschelde flood defences at one end of the island and Watersnoodmuseum (flood museum) at the other, Schouwen-Duiveland is inextricably linked with the sea. The island is surrounded by the North Sea, the Oosterschelde National Park and the waters of Grevelingenmeer. It also has many places where the world under the water is just as stunning as the world above the surface.

Appealing landscapes

The battle against water is reflected in the landscape. The remains of creeks and inundated land have become attractive havens for wildlife. Not only can you enjoy the dunes, dykes, salt marshes and polders, there are some magnificent forests too. Schouwen-Duiveland’s charming countryside provides the perfect surroundings for walking and cycling.

Kop van Schouwen

The dunes of Kop van Schouwen are a real Mecca for hikers, cyclists, mountain-bikers and other sports enthusiasts. Here you can find sand hills, valleys and Zeeland’s largest woodland: Westenschouwen Forest. On the other hand, you can take an exhilarating walk on one of its windswept beaches.

Schouwen’s south coast

This area of outstanding natural beauty is part of the largest national park in the Netherlands: Oosterschelde National Park. It is a unique and dynamic wildlife sanctuary. It provides rich pickings for birdspotters: it is an ornithological reserve with an international allure. In addition to the 40-kilometre-long cycle path along the entire south coast of Schouwen, there is a network of hiking trails in Schelphoek and Krekengebied Ouwerkerk.
