Over deze locatie

Near Westkerke lies the so-called Westkerkse berg. Of the approximately 12 mountains that were there on Tholen, only this one remains. The 7 m high mountain was raised in three phases. The
The lower layer, which reaches up to 1 m N.A.P., will have served as a refuge from high tide on the still uncovered salt marshes. The second elevation is related to a function as a castle hill. The charcoal remnants found in this elevation amount to ca. 1025.
A simple wooden reinforcement (motte) must have stood on the mountain at the time, as can also be seen on the Bayeux tapestry of 1066. On the third elevation remnants of brick have been found which may have come from a stone tower. Both the mound/castle hill and the forecourt with the Hooge huys on the side of the village were surrounded by moats.
