Groede and its nearby polders have much to offer, including a village route and a coastal one. History comes to life here and the countryside of Cletemspolder will wow you. Statesman and poet Jacob Cats was so invested in Zeeland-Flanders that he devoted his florins to having the polders dried out. Cats-powered polders, then, not to mention a country pile just beyond Groede, owned by the wealthy Cats family. Step back in time on your walk through Groede village. The Slijkstraatje (‘mud lane’) has a bevvy of former craftsmen’s workshops, and more period storefronts than you’ll have time for. The cheery pub has repasts to blast you back from the past, and a charming inn will happily give you a bed for the night. You’re welcome!
