Near to Kapelle you’ll find the Castle Path walking route, traversing a deeply historical area – there used to be a whopping five(!) castles here…
Zuid-Beveland was once divided by a large inlet. It was in this archipelago that fortresses popped up, in the 10th century, Maalstede among them. The chapel in that particular fortress, is where Kapelle found its name: ‘Capelle der Maelsteden’.
Maalstede was a magnificent castle, and the chapel was one of the largest village churches of Zeeland. The Castle Path then meanders on, through yet more history, which was shaped largely by rich merchants in later years. Come, and be enchanted by it all.
