Prince Maurits and the village of IJzendijke are inextricably linked by historical events, as this route will show you. The warring factions – the Northern Netherlands versus the Spanish Crown – took to their strongholds in the Eighty Years’ War, skulking in forts and behind earthen ramparts. These are, collectively, known as the State-Spanish Lines, and there are still some slivers left to still your beating historical heart, along the route. Prince Maurits forever captivated the minds of IJzendijke folk, when he vigorously sent the Spaniards packing from the Ysendijck fortress. As a token of their thanks, they erected a statue of him in the market square. Museum ‘Het Bolwerk’ has more tales to tell of the military past of this land.
