About this location

In the Watersnoodmuseum in Ouwerkerk you can learn about the 1953 flood disaster and the struggle against water. A number of Phoenix caissons were used to close the dyke holes. Large concrete barges (62 x 20 x 18 wide) were used to close the largest holes. In the last closure hole near Ouwerkerk, four of these giant caissons are located in the dike, as a monument to the struggle against the water. These caissons, connected to underground passages, house the Watersnoodmuseum
